A recent Iftar gathering hosted by actor-politician Thalapathy Vijay has sparked widespread controversy across religious and political circles. The Thalapathy Vijay Iftar event, held in Chennai on March 8, has become the center of a growing debate about religious sincerity and political strategy, leading to a formal fatwa issued by a prominent Islamic cleric.
Cleric Issues Fatwa Amid Muslim Outrage
Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi Barelvi, the president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, has called on Muslims to boycott Vijay and his political party, Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK). Accusing Vijay of exploiting Muslim sentiments for political gain, the cleric stated that the actor’s past film roles portrayed Muslims as terrorists and extremists.
“In movies like Beast, Vijay depicted Muslims in a highly negative manner. Now he is trying to appear sympathetic by organizing an Iftar event. This is nothing more than political opportunism,” said Maulana Razvi.

Iftar Event Criticized for Religious Insensitivity
The Thalapathy Vijay Iftar event, intended to promote unity during Ramadan, was held at the YMCA grounds and attended by hundreds. Vijay participated in evening prayers and broke the fast alongside Muslim guests. However, criticism soon followed from local Muslim groups who alleged that individuals at the event were not fasting and that some participants were disrespectful.
The Tamil Nadu Sunnat Jamath filed an official complaint, claiming that the gathering included people with no connection to Islamic traditions. “The presence of non-fasting individuals and rowdy elements insulted our beliefs,” said Syed Kous, the group’s treasurer.
Political Leaders Join the Criticism
Former BJP Tamil Nadu president K. Annamalai also questioned Vijay’s sincerity. “You drink and smoke in movies, and suddenly you’re wearing a skullcap and hosting Iftar? This is not real change. It’s a stunt to gain minority votes,” he said.
The Thalapathy Vijay Muslim controversy has since become a major talking point in Tamil Nadu’s political discourse.
Public Reaction and Growing Concerns
The backlash has raised concerns about the increasing use of religious symbolism in politics. Many community members and social observers believe that such gestures must come from genuine respect, not vote-bank calculations.
As Vijay continues to expand his political presence through TVK, this incident could influence how different communities perceive his leadership.
Conclusion
The Thalapathy Vijay Iftar event, meant to foster unity, has unintentionally deepened religious divisions. With the Thalapathy Vijay Muslim controversy gaining momentum, political figures must be more mindful when engaging with faith communities. Trust and respect are earned—not staged.
